Biography

Born in Lebanon in 1970, Hussein HUSSEIN has developed an artistic practice shaped by a diverse personal and intellectual journey. He spent a decisive part of his childhood and adolescence in Senegal before settling in Lebanon. This experience across territories, cultures, and systems of perception has had a lasting impact on his outlook and has nurtured a sensitivity attentive to signs, environments, and transitional states.

Although he pursued technical training in electronics and later obtained a master’s degree in pharmacy, Hussein chose to devote his research and practice to the field of visual arts.

This dual scientific background deeply influences his artistic work. It shapes an approach that is both analytical and intuitive, in which observation, analysis, and construction play a central role.

A close reading of his work reveals an internal coherence based on a symbolic and metaphysical exploration of human experience. His paintings create a space of tension between imagination and reality, between what is perceived and what remains latent. The human figure, often fragmented or partially erased, appears within environments marked by traces, suggesting psychological states rather than narrative situations.

His technique, when observed closely, reveals a unique, dense, and layered pictorial language. The material is built up through successive layers, integrating visual and semiotic processes that contribute to an open reading of the image. Each surface functions as a field of signs, inviting the viewer’s eye to move, linger, and reconstruct meaning.

Hussein has presented his work in seven solo exhibitions and has participated in more than sixty group exhibitions in Lebanon, Spain, Palestine, Cairo, and Greece. His works are part of public and private collections, notably those of Bank Audi and Dar Zefta.

2026: Solo exhibition at Galerie Cheriff Tabet.
